For the Brave: Haunted Houses

Twisted Crypt Haunted House, Rockford. One of the area's best-known haunts, on East State Street. It's open weekends through Oct 31, plus Thursday, Oct 29. Tickets start at $20. Not recommended for little kids or anyone who sleeps with the lights on.

Karnival of Karnage, Belvidere. A longtime local favorite for serious scare-seekers. It's also hosting a trunk-or-treat on Halloween afternoon from 1 to 3 PM. Check its website for haunt hours.

Fall Fun for the Whole Family

Not into scares? There's still plenty of time to soak up fall:

  • Skelly's Corn Maze & Fall Festival, Janesville. Open daily 9 AM to 6 PM through Oct 31. Corn maze, pumpkins, and classic farm fun.
  • Anderson Japanese Gardens, Rockford. The fall colors are stunning right now, and it's a peaceful break from the sugar rush.
  • A local pumpkin patch. Grab one last pumpkin for carving night. Halloween's on a Saturday, so Friday night carving parties are a great tradition to start.

Halloween Safety Tips

A few reminders to keep the night fun for everyone:

  1. Light it up. Add reflective tape or glow sticks to costumes, and carry a flashlight. It's dark by 6 PM.
  2. Stick to familiar streets. Trick-or-treat in well-lit neighborhoods and cross at corners.
  3. Check the candy. Look over treats before anyone digs in, especially for kids with allergies.
  4. Drive slow. Especially between 4 and 8 PM, when the streets are full of excited kids.
  5. Look for teal pumpkins. A teal pumpkin on a porch means that house has non-food treats for kids with food allergies.

Homeowners: Make Your House the Stop on the Block

Want to be the house everyone talks about? Keep your walkway clear and well lit, have your treats ready by the door, and set out a pumpkin or two.

And if you've been thinking about selling, there's no better time to notice how welcoming your home feels from the curb. Halloween is a great little "curb appeal check" before the holidays.
